Spencer said that Hudson and she had seen all their other co-workers with Jimmy John's and decided that is where they wanted to go to lunch. She remembered that when she had been there previously they had offered her a discount because she is a Rollins graduate student and an employee.
Spencer's trip to the sub shop started off normally as she walked to one of the two ordering stations while Hudson went to the opposite one. "I placed my order to an older gentleman whom I had not seen before," she said. When Spencer reached the end of her order she mentioned she was a Rollins employee. According to Spencer, the man taking her order said, "'well, what is that supposed to get you?'"
Spencer said she told the man that she was supposed to get a discount and he replied "'Oh, well, we don't give discounts to employees, only to students,'" and Spencer described how she proceeded to tell the man that she is a grad student. "He really just had a sour attitude towards me," continued Spencer. "So, after I got my food I went to go get my drink over at the soda machine and the man comes over from the register and confronts me … and says 'I just wanted to let you know that I gave you the discount, but you can't get the discount anymore. This is only for Rollins students, it's not for employees. I gave it to you today, but you're not going to be able to get it again,'" said Spencer.
Hudson claims that she received the Rollins discount. "They absolutely gave me the discount," she said. "I was standing right beside her [Spencer]." Hudson was not waited on by the same man, but said she was assured by the woman taking her order that Rollins employees do receive discounts.
"I was given the discount," said Hudson. "Every other employee in this building and every other person in my department were given that fifty cent discount and we're all white. The tone of voice of the man that waited on Sheena was ugly." Hudson noted that even though she was not waited on by the same man, she was close enough to hear all the comments made between Spencer and the waiter.

I don't know whether Jimmy John's is obligated to give discounts to everyone who purchases sandwiches there. But in the face of this apparent act of discrimination, I'm surprised by the absence of an apology from the restaurant. (Continued…)

I think they were just unclear whether they were giving discounts to both students and faculty or just to students. The employees were probably just not all on the same page. (Continued…)

Ok so this was all over a small misunderstanding about a fifty cent discount. I mean really?... what is the big deal it's fifty cents and if you can't afford that then you should not be eating out. (Continued…)

I think both parties could have handled it better. But in the big scope of things what are we really talking about is a small fifty cent discount. If you can't afford that then you shouldn't be eating out. (Continued…)

Whether the issue is ageism, racism or just poor customer service, the point is that Ms. Spencer is a Rollins student who was not treated like other Rollins students and Jimmy Johns didn't attempt to apologize or remedy the situation. (Continued…)

Ms. Spencer complains about being treated like a Rollins Faculty which she is. She may also be a student but she is a faculty official first. The discount is for students and for her to complain about a fifty cent discount and ruin it for the rest of us I feel is unfair on her behalf. (Continued…)

I just feel like she is still a teacher first. And the rule is for students.

I would like to thank the many people in the Rollins community who have shown their support. It is my sincere hope that no one will ever ignore when anyone is being mistreated, regardless of race. (Continued…)

We are the owners of the Jimmy John's in Winter Park. This issue was not a race issue, it was a misunderstanding by the staff as to who should have received the discount. (Continued…)
