The Rollins College baseball team welcomed three Division I teams to Winter Park during Spring Break for the team's annual Baseball Week Tournament. Taking wins from Georgetown, Maine, and the University of Pennsylvania, the Tars came away with the championship for the 22nd time in the tournament's 61-year history.

Beginning tournament play on Monday, March 9, Rollins came away with a 9-2 win over Georgetown. The Tars continued to play well, taking a 4-3 win from the University of Maine on Tuesday. Moving forward, however, the Rollins' nine struggled, losing their next three games, one to each of the participating schools before rebounding to beat UPenn 13-8 on Saturday en route to the Championship Game against Maine.

Against the Black Bears, the Tars' bats came alive as they have all season, although this time coming from behind, managing six runs against a strong Maine pitching staff. Rollins struggled to begin the contest, falling behind 5-0 before scoring five runs to tie the game in the top of the sixth (Rollins was the visiting team although the game was played at Alfond Stadium). Breaking the scoring drought for the Tars, 3B Ryan Luker (Class of 2010) crossed the plate after infielder Michael Garczynski (Class of 2011) drew a walk with the bases loaded. From there, SS Justin Yount (Class of 2010) drove a two-run single to right before Taylor Ferguson added a two-run double to finish the scoring for the inning.

Neither team scored again until the top of the ninth when Eugene Martinez (Class of 2009) laced a single through the left side to score Ryan Maddern (Class of 2009) from second. Maddern had come into the game as a pinch-runner for Bryan Bennett (Class of 2009), who had singled and then advanced to second on a Luker base hit. Marc Hewett (Class of 2010) (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, throwing four innings of shutout baseball in relief of Tim Griffin (Class of 2010). Kevin Scanlan (1-1) took the loss for the Black Bears (9-6).

The Baseball Week title concluded a successful week and a half for the Tars baseball team, having beaten St. Anselm, Stonehill and American International College before the start of tournament play. Rollins, 16-9 after Baseball Week, turned their attention to Bridgeport for a game last Tuesday, which the Tars won 12-11. Following the game against Bridgeport, the Tars again turned their attention to SSC opponents as they traveled to Lakeland to face Florida Southern in a three game set that began Friday night. Unfortunately, the Mocs swept the series, winning 5-1, 7-3, and 5-4. The Tars hoped to rebound on Monday against Ohio State in a game played after The Sandspur's article submission deadline, before taking on Flagler in a home-and-home series beginning today, Friday, March 27.
